Gaming laptops are often hard to come by, especially with the current trend of thin, sleek laptops that totally dominate the market today. Avid gamers often avoid purchasing laptops to play their favorite games as the sheer hardware demands of modern games are not present in these small, thin machines. However, Nvidia plans to change this "size does matter" mentally towards laptops and notebooks with their new GTX 960M and 950m GPUs.
Nvidia launched these new GPUs to give gamers the chance to turn their laptops into decent gaming devices, though it doesn't mean that it will perform optimally in every situation. This is because these chips significantly heat up when used requiring effective cooling systems, which are not present in most notebooks or laptops. However, all agree that with Nvidia's new GPUs, laptop users will experience a considerable speed boost, especially when playing games.
Asus, one of the leading laptop brands, overcame this thermal hurdle with their hyper cool technology. As a promotional move, Asus released their newest quad gaming laptop, the G501 and equipped it with one of Nvidia's new GPUs, the GTX 960M. They showed to the public that their laptop can handle the power of the 960M through their cooling technology enabling the G501 to handle even the most demanding games. It also showed the power of Nvidia's new GPUs to effectively turn laptops into gaming machines, provided it had good cooling systems.
Nvidia enumerates the notable features of both GPUs on their site starting with the ShadowPlay. This allow gamers to easily record their gaming achievements and upload it seamlessly to YouTube. Furthermore, both GPUs have BatteryBoost, a performance feature that increases portability by optimally regulating battery usage when at play. Finally Nvidia adds the Optimus, which automatically selects the best performance settings for gamers. Nvidia also announced that the GTX 960 and 950 are Windows Hardware Qualification Certified and will debut in Alienware, Lenovo, Asus, HP and Acer.
Though the PC is still the preferred platform for games, through Nvidia's new GPUs, gamers can bring their games anywhere and have a decent play experience on their laptops while on the road.
