The Mozilla Firefox anti-feminism extension called Men Kampf has been removed by Mozilla due to a violation of the browser's Conditions of Use. According to Bertrand Neveux, Mozilla's director of marketplace and content ecosystem, the said add-on was removed after it received reports of abuse today "and it was determined that the add-on violates our Conditions of Use."
Based on its description, Men Kampf is designed "to replace radfem rethoric [sic] with nazi friendly alternatives". It works by scanning the page that Firefox users visit for any words that can be linked to feminism and replaces them with said "alternatives". Hence, an article about feminism will be about nazism as what happened to a Feminism article on Wikipedia.
The developer of the extension, Erim Secla, said that it was all for fun. According to Secla, it was nothing more than a crude joke, a "jokey extension" that mocks how similar many web content are, except when some keywords are replaced. As such, Secla expressed his confusion at how Firefox arrived at the decision considering that the message he received from the company had not mentioned anything about violation of a specific rule and guideline.
Mihaita Bamburic of Beta News begs to disagree. In his article published yesterday, he pointed out that it was not the process that Secla had violated. It was his attempt at promoting nazi ideologies and, worst, linking it to Feminism that made it offensive. Bamburic noted that feminism is a movement that promotes equality, a condition that Jews were deprived of during Holocaust - one of the darkest parts in the history where Nazis had major participation.
It's counterpart in Chrome, Man Kampf, continues to be available in Chrome Store. Secla admitted that it was the inspiration for the add-on, which Bamburic found equally offensive. According to the developer's description of the Chrome counterpart, "it makes any radical feminist post sound like something straight out of Hitler's mouth!"
That could be fun for some that's why there are those who use it. Those who find it offensive can simply ignore it. Unfortunately, the subject matters involved are not meant for making fun. That's where the fun stops.
