Google Nexus 6 Android 5.1 Release, OTA, Installation and More

By

T-Mobile Nexus 6 subscribers now can experience Google's first maintenance release for Lollipop as the U.S. mobile carrier begins rollout of Android 5.1 to the device.

The first surprise announcement came out via Twitter from T-Mobile product officer @askdes with exact post reads: "For all you guys & gals out there waiting for 5.1 with VoLTE on your @TMobile #Nexus6- the rollout has started! Thanks for your patience!"

As mentioned, the update comes with VoLTE and HD Voice call support as well as the device's potential to pick up T-Mobile's 700MHz frequency airwaves. However, Wi-Fi calling, one of Android 5.1's banner features, does not come with the update to the carrier's Nexus 6 as it will be out in another update.

Another official announcement is posted on T-Mobile's website. Dated March 16, Google Nexus 6 receives a mandatory over-the-air (OTA) software update to Android 5.1 Lollipop with band version LMY47M.

Android 5.1 Lollipop provides improvements like software stability and various bug fixes, while new feature Device Anti-Theft has been added. Device Anti-Theft keeps Nexus 6 locked when owner does now sign in with registered Google email and password, even when factory settings have to be reset.

If not automatically notified by the update, manual download of the new software version can be done through the following steps.

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap About phone.

3. Tap System updates.

4. Tap Check now.

5. Follow on-screen instructions.

Requirements of the current software version update must include device with software version LRX22C. The update is 409 MB and needs 50 percent battery life and Wi-Fi connection. Other upgrade downloadable versions are LRX210 and LNX07M.

According to T-Mobile, the update took a little later than expected because Google, the mobile carrier, and the Android Team have to plan out software customization including changes in device hardware, the carrier's mobile radios and applications.

Meanwhile, Nexus 5 also will start to receive Android 5.1 Lollipop update soon. Google has recently released the factory images of the software update which translates to a future update.
