With the advent of Windows 10, Microsoft is making its presence known in an effort to conquer the multi-platform landscape by unveiling its mobile solution: the Lumia 940.
Dropping the name Nokia (which it acquired a couple of years back), the Microsoft Lumia 940 is seen as the company's attempt to make its presence known in the smartphone industry, a place dominated by Apple and Android devices.
One thing Microsoft will retain, though, is the high-quality materials used in manufacturing the phone units, as seen in its retention of the Gorilla Glass 4 protective screen for their planned flagship unit. Having strudy materials is not enough; users can expect this Windows mobile to have a decent set of specifications.
Speaking of screen, the phone will have a 5-inch 1080p QHD which is perfect for its 24MP Pureview main camera and 5MP secondary camera.
The Lumia 940 will sport a 2.7 GHx Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor and 3GB RAM. It also has an internal storage of 32GB, expandable to 128GB via MicroSD.
Based on its dimensions 137x71x8.9mm, the Lumia 940 will be a compact LTE-ready phone unit. It's also lightweight at 149 grams.
It's also reported to come with docking station support, making it function not only as a phone but also as a standalone PC which is one of the main gists of getting unto Windows 10.
Microsoft is also going to get ambitious and try to set new trends, like the Lumia 940 having the capability to determine whether a user is left-handed or right-handed and having an iris scanner in place of a finger scanner for added security. The company is hoping to finally put the lackluster performance of the unit's predecessor, the Lumia 930, behind it.
The only thing similar between the two that needs to be mentioned is its nearly identical pricing.
Slated to be released at around the same time as the Windows 10 OS release.
Time will tell if Windows will be able to finally dispel the duopoly, but with its Windows 10 Continuum solution, the OS maker is bent on making it work on both pc and mobile devices on which it is heavily banking on to take the hearts of mobile users and manufacturers the world over.
