Anonymous is once again making the headlines with what could be considered as a big turn around, for the hacker group has now pledged to raise arms against the terrorist group ISIS and even said that the cyber world is only owned by them.
Anonymous, the hacktivist group recently released the biggest list of Twitter account names in order to encourage Twitter to close down the accounts and to raise global awareness of the ISIS's growing recruitment presence as reported by International Business Times. (Via Washington Times)
The hacker group collaborated with 2 other hacktivists, Ghostsec and Ctrlsec to track down ISIS's social media accounts.It was notably a historical event in the digital world for it's the first time that these hacker groups formed an alliance against the world notorious terrorist group, ISIS. The modern day terrorist groups ISIS and ISIL are considered to be tech and social media-savvy which depend mainly on Twitter to spread their propaganda and use the social media platform for its' recruitment of fighters and followers across the globe.
Anonymous was reported to have recently shut down about 800 Twitter accounts, 12 Face book pages, and over 50 email addresses with links to the Islamic State as of this month. Earlier this year, the hacktivist group targeted dozens of ISIS militant's recruitment sites and began closing down the accounts.
In other updates involving the hacker group, last month the FBI started utilizing information obtained by Anonymous to help the bureau to search for the hackers who took over the Centcom Twitter account and You Tube channel tarnishing them with ISIS. (Via Hackers News Bulletin)
In a related news, in a video that appeared on You Tube, Anonymous and RedCult announced the operation #OpISIS who claimed to have implemented an all out cyber attack of the social media accounts used by ISIS. According to the video, Operation #OpISIS is carried out by groups of "Muslims, Christians, and Jews" and another masked individual who discusses the goal of the campaign.
Anonymous stated that it's just the beginning of the operation and even warned ISIS that there would be "more to come." The hacker group also previously threatened to target Saudi Arabia and related countries for giving ISIS financial aid and support. (Via The Hacker News)
