Erik Ross, a computer science student successfully ported the first level of the Super Mario 64 game to PC, ahead of Nintendo. The game uses the free game developing engine, Unity and can be played on a regular internet browser. According to Ross through his blog, recreating the first level of Super Mario 64 in Unity is just a demonstration project for his 'super character controller,' a tool he developed to aid Unity game developers to better control character creation.
Erik Ross specifically stated on his blog that he is not interested to 'develop this any further or to resolve any bugs, unless they're horrendously game breaking..." However, it showed the power of the Unity engine and the possibilities it provides for aspirant game programmers and developers.
The Mario franchise has changed how people look at games and have virtually kick-started Nintendo gaming success. It was through Mario that Nintendo gained their footing and grew into a big game giant today. Mario continues to be a household name and an iconic image to represent the entirety of video gamers.
According to PC world, the Unity engine is a powerful tool, independent game developers can freely use. It gives people a good amount of developing tools to create games with a good level of detail. With Unity and the minds of people like Erik Ross, the gaming industry will continue to move forward with fresh ideas coming from fans.
Fan made games are always wonders to behold, especially to who dedicates large amount of time because of their love of the game and not due to monetary compensations. This fan-made PC version of Super Mario 64 does gives ideas that such a game would be amazing, but Nintendo hasn't revealed any plans of such. The main story on Nintendo today is its apparent yearlong Legend of Zelda delay and it becoming a E3 2015 no show. However, with titles such as Mario under Nintendo's belt, they can easily whip up another Mario title and once again get the interested of millions of fans worldwide.
