Free-to-play 'Fable Legends' will be good to gamers: An attempt at creating a happy gamer community, says developer

After the initial announcement saying "Fable Legends" will be a free-to-play game, the news was met by skepticism, but the game's developer says the change will lead to happier gamers. In a recent interview, "Fable Legends" Game Director David Eckelberry said the game's publisher, Microsoft, is more interested in creating a community made up of happy gamers.

"Microsoft is much more interested in making a happy community of players and making the Xbox and Windows 10 a fun place to play -- it doesn't need us to be evil," said Eckelberry.

In addition to expressing Microsoft's reasons behind allowing the game to become a free-to-play title, Eckelberry also said the decision to go with this format was the result of experimentation, innovation, and a wholly organic process, according to Gamespot.

When this conclusion was reached, Eckelberry said a decision was made to keep the plans under lock and key, according to Gamesindustry.biz.

"We really wanted the world to get a sense of that, we wanted everyone to know we wanted to do this innovative thing. Look, whether we had charged $60 for it or brought it to market as we are, we wanted people to be excited about playing it, instead of worrying about how they were going to buy it," said Eckelberry.

Eckelberry said anything and everything that could possibly factor into how the game is played or the overall experience from doing so can be acquired from treasure chests or simply using in-game currency to make the necessary purchases, according to Gameplanet Australia.

New content in the form of quests and areas will also be added to the game later on after the title is released. Upon the game's release, players will automatically gain access to "Season One" content consisting of all the elements any gamer would expect. "Fable Legends" will be released on the Xbox One and Windows 10 later in 2015.
