Sad news for Downtown Abbey fanatics, Gareth Neame, Executive producer of the show released a statement on Thursday that Season 6 will be the last for the Crawley family drama.
According to Gareth, the journey of the Crawley family and those who serve them for five years should end. The producers wanted to close the doors of Downtown Abbey, when it felt natural and right for the plot, when the series was still being watched and enjoyed by its viewers. In line with this Gareth ensure a final season filled with intrigue and drama, but with the added twist of discovering where and how they all end up.
For fans who have been watching Downtown, the cancellation is not really surprising. The British show has been said to end for some time. The decision not to go beyond Season 6 was from the cast. Most of the actors wanted to leave the show, which was constant with earlier news that actors were finding jobs in the U.S. The cast even made some comments that state the end was about to happen.
Tom Branson (Allen Leech), said in November that he couldn't think the show goes beyond season 6. He told E! Online, "In my heart of hearts, I can't see it going more than two [seasons] more," further explained. "I think the period of time we want to tell, we're coming to the end that us as actors we can keep playing these characters."
Maggie Smith also caused some hullabaloo lately when she said Season 6 would be her last. "I mean, I certainly can't keep going," the actress explained via Radio Times about her character, Lady Violet. "To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We're into the late 1920s." The series started in the after of the Titanic sinking in 1912
There were 9.8 million fans watched the Season 5 finale of Downtown Abbey on PBS. The highest-rated show Season 6 premier has not been announced yet.
