Sony starts leaving retrograde Android KitKat and moves on with rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop to a number of its signature Xperia devices, including Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, and Z.
Sony has announced yesterday the update while immediately commencing it to Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact. However, timing and availability may depend on the market and/or the mobile carrier.
Sony brings a huge inspiration of Google's Material Design to the devices' user interface while maintaining a minimalistic UI and application design. Android 5.0 Lollipop also brings improvements in storage control to make a lot easier moving apps from local storage to the SD card.
With Material Design UI, notifications and lock screen with entirely customizable settings will hit Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact.
The Japanese tech titan also employed Lollipop's multi-user profiles and guest mode features to enable multiple people to use one device. Sony also supports Android for Work program which helps users make profiles that separate and secure work data.
Android 5.0 Lollipop will also feature smart notification cards, convenient swipe shortcuts, enhanced quick settings, battery life and general performance improvements. For Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablet, Android 5.0 Lollipop will begin to roll out by next week. However, Sony has not included a changelog for the update for these devices.
Xperia Z2 users in some regions already received the update since last week even Sony had not announced it yet. This includes the Nordic and Baltic regions where the update also for Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact first rolled out.
Meanwhile, the original Xperia Z smartphone also was confirmed to receive the update, two years when the the device first hit the shelves. Despite its age, Sony also plans to bring the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to the device according to a report.
Other devices receiving the upgrade soon are its low-end handsets Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3.
