People, especially gamers would pay for better visuals on their game. However, downgrading a game's graphics only to sell a visual "DLC style" upgrade afterwards is shady and borderline extortion. This is the unanimous consensus of pc gamers everywhere after the announcement that fans must buy a visual upgrade pack for Dark Souls 2.
The ire of gamers didn't come from the price of the upgrades, but the apparent "marketing" scheme, the game's publishers are obviously doing just to squeeze a bit more money from its avid fans. After the announcement, fans of the series flock to comment with a string of unpleasant four letter words and expressing their utter dismay with strong vocabulary that are among the seven words one can't say on TV, in this case, online.
The reason for the utter dismay of gamers are enumerated below as pointed out by Lazygamer and Digitaltrends.
1. The Dark Souls 2 remastered comes in two versions the DX9 and DX11 and each are priced differently. DX9 is $40, while DX11 is $50. From Software expects gamers to pay more for a few visual upgrades.
2. For gamers who own a copy of Dark Souls 2, they must buy these upgrades first to enjoy the remastered quality. The price of a DX11 upgrade is $29.99. In comparison, there are full games today that cost less than the Dark Souls 2 visual upgrade.
3. Gamers with different versions will not be able to play together.
4. Finally, once upgraded, game saves cannot be exported to the upgraded version.
Many are dismayed by From Software's marketing strategy, as it shows that game companies can 'intentionally' dumb down certain properties of the game such as visuals and later sell it to fans as a pricey DLC. Nevertheless, Dark Souls 2 remastered version will be released on one of the most revered day in western traditions, April Fools. Though this announcement is a good joke, sadly it is not, they are really going to sell it.
