12-inch Retina MacBook CPU performance slow? Plus, MacBook Pro with Retina Display pros and cons

By

Last Wednesday afternoon, MacRumors saw a 64-bit Geekbench benchmark of the Retina MacBook 2015 that reportedly showed two single-scores of 1924 and 2044. The benchmark was done twice. When the CPU performance of the entry-level Retina MacBook was also compared to the higher-end 2011 MacBook Air (built with a Core i7 processor clocked at 1.8 GHz), both was perceived to have similar speeds.

When the Retina MacBook 2015 was compared with the 2015 entry-level MacBook Air, it was found out that the MacBook Air is faster than the Retina MacBook.

The entry-level Retina MacBook 2015 is built with an Intel Core M-5731 processor that is clocked at 1.10 GHz while the MacBook Air 2015 is built with an Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 1.6 GHz. It reportedly scored 2881 (single-core) and 5757 (multi-core), reports by MacRumors.

However, it was also noted that in terms of graphics performance, the new MacBook surpasses that of the 2011 MacBook Air. Further, even though both machines seem to have similar CPU speeds, the 2015 MacBook would still outperform the 2011 MacBook, since the 2015 machine is built the Intel HD 5300 graphics and an improved SSD.

Apple also offers two additional processors as upgrade options for the Retina MacBook. One is at 1.2 GHz for the higher-end machine and the other is at 1.3 GHz as an optional built-to-order upgrade.

The upcoming Retina MacBook 2015 is set to be released on April 10. Different prices are offered for two different models: $1,299 for the 1.1 GHz/8 GB/256 GB model and $1,500 for the 1.2 GHz/8 GB/512 GB model.
