Amiibo Wave 4 pre-orders overwhelm retailer's website: Can people still get their hands on the Amiibo figures?

By

In what can only be described as a chaotic blitz of fandom and consumerism, even notable video game retailer GameStop had their website crash after hordes and hordes of pre-orders came in for Amiibo Wave 4 figures. The news of GameStop's overwhelmed servers comes at the heels of an earlier announcement from Nintendo saying some of the Wave 4 Amiibo figures would be sold at specific retailers. In addition, GameStop revealed their store-exclusive Amiibo would be none other than Ness of the game "Earthbound."

Merely minutes after the pre-orders went online, the retailer was already swamped from both traffic on their website and inside their stores, according to Gamespot. Not long after the launch of the pre-orders and the subsequent crash of GameStop, reports surfaced that the retailer had completely run out of Wave 4 Amiibo figures, according to Forbes.

The retailer issued their very own statement regarding the pre-orders. "At this time, all Wave 4 amiibo pre-orders are sold out," said GameStop via their Facebook account.

It is currently unclear whether the reason for the figures quickly selling out is solely because of unexpectedly overwhelming demand or because supplies were limited to begin with. In addition to Ness, there were other Amiibo figures made available for pre-order on GameStop. The list includes Charizard, Lucina, Pac-Man, Robin, Wario, Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and the Splatoon Pack, which includes Inkling Boy and Girl along with Squid, according to Polygon.

Each of the newly-announced figures can be bought separately for $12.99 a pop, while the Splatoon Pack containing three Amiibo figures is currently being sold for $34.99. Other retailer-exclusive Amiibo figures includes Jigglypuff for Target and Greninja for Toys R Us.

Pre-orders for the Greninja Amiibo figure will be available on the Toys R Us website starting April 3. The Wave 4 Amiibo 4 figures will be officially released on May 29.
