Offensive limerick removed from 'Pillars of Eternity': What other changes are being made to the game

By

After some hubbub came up surrounding an offensive limerick seen inside "Pillars of Eternity," the game's developer, Obsidian Entertainment, took action and removed the cause of consternation. The company issued a statement shortly after removing the cited content.

"It's come to our attention that a piece of backer-created content has made into Pillars of Eternity that was not vetted. Once it was brought to our attention, it followed the same vetting process as all of our other content. Prior to release, we worked with many of our backers to iterate on content they asked to be put into the game that didn't strike the right tone," according to Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart.

Obsidian's CEO said the company consulted with the Kickstarter backer responsible for creating the offensive limerick before they went ahead and removed it, according to Gamespot. The limerick could be seen as a random epitaph inside a graveyard. The limerick was seen as striking a tone of transmisogyny.

Ever since being spotted inside the game, a screenshot containing the offensive content immediately made the rounds online and drew negative comments from various members of social media. Twitter commenters also saw the transmisogynistic tone within the limerick with one user saying it was "not acceptable" to have such content inside the game, according to Kotaku.

Another Twitter commenter said the "bloody/gritty setting" of the game should not be used as an "excuse for lazy writing." Notably, there were other commenters online on the opposite side of the issue, indicating there was nothing wrong with what it said. Obsidian Entertainment chose to side with the former camp, and changed the content to avoid any further issues.

It has since been replaced with a new limerick that seems to hint at the poor decision initially made to run the content in the first place, according to PC Gamer.
