Gwyneth Paltrow, who is also known as a food guru, is determined to stop hunger after being chosen as one of the challengers for the Food Bank for New York challenge. The actress however got mixed reactions from netizens with what she got on her grocery basket using a $29-dollar food stamp.
Paltrow, who is also known to be an advocate of healthy eating, bought mostly vegetables, fruits, herbs and some basic ingredients for cooking. This consisted of 16 items that included a tray of eggs, a bunch of romaine lettuce, one head of iceberg lettuce, an avocado, a tomato, one piece of white onion, onion leeks, scallions, a pack of green peas, black beans, whole grain brown rice, a bunch of parsely, 1 garlic, 7 limes, one green pepper and a pack of gluten-free tortillas. She posted a picture of them on her twitter on April 9 which read, "This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store-what families on SNAP (i.e.food stamps) have to live on for a week." The post garnered 1.3 favorites and 1.6 K retweets as of press time. In another post, she showed her support to the poor people of New York by posting that she is "walking in their shoes to see how far we get" and even nominated another one to do the same and donate.
WHAT NETIZENS SAY
This, however, was met with criticisms and sarcasm. A twitter user said "Don't worry, Poor People: Gwyneth Paltrow is here to show you how to Goop your food-stamp benefits". Goop is Paltrow's website that also talks about food, fitness and health. Another reaction read, "If only people living off food stamps could do the same". Reactions about the food list being low in fat and calorie also came up, saying that they are not suffice for a busy mother.
On the more positive side, some say this could also be a good eye opener on the subject of nutrition. A report says Paltrow's post on the Food Bank for New York Challenge could be an effective tool to raise awareness not just on hunger but on having access to healthy but inexpensive food. "She's not doing it for herself or for you. She's doing it so people will talk about food stamps. Which we are."
Gwyneth Paltrow has not given any statement on these yet. The svelte figure actress from the start is determined to live up to the food stamp challenge.
