Ghostbusters 3 Latest Update: Melissa McCarthy leads all female cast; Emma Stone rumored to have interviewed for role

By

Ghostbusters was a supernatural comedy released back in 1984 that enjoyed tremendous success in the box office. Its story revolves around a group of parapsychologists whose job was to capture and contain ghosts.

It was actually conceived by Dan Aykroyd who happened to be one of the leads in the movie. He specifically wrote it for himself and Saturday night Live alum John Belushi. Due to Belushi's tragic passing, the part fell to Bill Murray and other notable actors such as Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis.

The premise of Ghostbusters is basically New York city came under attack by ghosts and it was up to a group of parapsychologists to save the day. The movie was released in 1984 and made $240 million on its theatrical run both in the U.S. and abroad.

The second installment entitled Ghostbusters 2 which came out 5 years later was also successful but didn't quite bring in the viewers as much as the first one. It was called by some critics as flat and not as funny. This is the reason why they sat on the third installment and everybody included in the project decided to pursue other acting assignments instead.

Jumping to the present, 26 years later the third installment is finally underway and fans couldn't be happier. The technology and effects nowadays could turn this into a real blockbuster. The movie is slated for release on July 22, 2016.

The third installment has a new twist though, Sony is planning to use an all female cast this time around as per Variety. Sources close to the project say that Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon are in negotiations for the reboot.

Paul Feig will be directing and will mean a reunion of sorts for Paul and Melissa McCarthy who played one of the leading roles in his outrageously funny comedy, Bridesmaids. Emma stone was rumored to have interviewed for the role but negotiations fell apart.

The schedules have yet to be worked out among the actresses but as soon as this is finalized, this will be the closest the studio has come to completing the highly awaited installment.Ghostbusters 3 will not include Bill Murray or Dan Aykroyd but people are still clamoring for another supernatural comedy to hit the theaters soon.

It's time to tick off July 22, 2016 on the calendar as Ghostbusters day.
