April 15 will forever be etched in the minds of survivors and families of those who were maimed or killed by the Boston Marathon bombing. Solemnity is observed as people take a moment of silence to pray for those who perished.
On this fateful day two years ago, two brothers took the road to violence, blasting away innocent people and bystanders who were taking part in the annual Boston Marathon. The casualties included an eight-year-old boy and a graduate student from China.
Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who planted the homemade bombs, killed three, critically injured many, but failed to break the spirit of those who survived. The annual celebration of the Boston Marathon has always been considered as an iconic day when individuals/families would be cheering each other on. It's considered a national holiday, a time when people would test their physical and mental faculties to the limit. On April 15, 2013, however, what was expected to be a celebratory event turned into tragedy.
To date, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been pronounced guilty on 30 counts for taking part in the terroristic act with his brother. Older brother Tamerlan died in a shootout with police following the terror attack and ensuing massive hunt.
Dzhokhar's defense counsel had tried to win over jurors by reasoning that it was the older Tamerlan who was the main instigator, and that the accused just followed his brother. The court ruled in favor of the prosecutors, though, who highlighted the appalling crime that devastated the lives of many.
Media scribes who looked into the background of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev uncovered the testimony of a history teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School where Dzhokhar studied. Dzhokhar is said to have been a promising pupil who excelled in sports and was a "compassionate" individual. The influence of kin and the values he chose to upheld, proved to be Dzhokhar's Achilles' heel.
It can be noted that the survivors have been as resilient as Boston itself. Some of those who survived, who sustained multiple broken bones, underwent surgery & physical therapy or faced amputation continue to move on with their lives. The horror that gripped people and the bloody scene after the bomb exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15 of 2013 still linger in the minds & hearts of those who were there.
