"Mulan" is Disney's latest pick as the animated character to be adapted in the big screen with a live-action version. Information about the film is coming thin as production is set to kick off just this year. What could be its possible plot, though? Will the live-action version remain faithful to Mulan's history or will Disney decide to re-imagine her story, maybe adopt the bisexual Mulan introduced by the Disney-ABC distributed series "Once Upon A Time"?
Re-imagining is not new in the Disney world, which popularized the character of Maleficent in 2014. The movie garnered global success with a more than $758 million worldwide gross. With the recent enlistment of Mulan in the live-action bandwagon of Disney, who could say that Disney won't go out of their way in re-imagining the tale of their Chinese princess?
"Once Upon A Time", distributed by Disney and ABC, already presented Mulan as bisexual. Her character, played by Jamie Chung, almost admitted to Aurora that she loves her. The episode shocked the viewers as expected although some were also delighted the by the show's bold storyline, especially that the show's demographic is a gamut from young adult to children. The bisexual storyline was not pursued on the shows recent seasons and was left open-ended.
If Disney decides to adapt this plot, they might face serious problem since Mulan is technically not a fictional character. The Disney princess is based on Hua Mulan's life story, a legendary woman from ancient China who took her father's place in the army and battled for twelve years. Re-imagining her story won't be that easy considering the conflict that it might bring in the Chinese folklore.
The live-action adaptation of "Mulan" in the big screen will surely be a hit to the audience albeit the present scarcity of details about its production. Will Disney retell Mulan's story or re-imagine it the way the series "Once Upon A Time" did?
