DC shines the spotlight on the infamous DC villains as the Suicide Squad movie goes into production. Excitement over Jared Leto's version of the Joker and a new additional villain makes it something fans and movie-goers will likely be looking forward to next year.
As Marvel Cinematic Universe gets busy lining up superhero movies for the next couple of years, DC Universe, on the other hand, has gone a bit to the "dark side". Not only are they focusing on superheroes with their upcoming Batman VS Superman film, but DC has also been playing with the idea presenting their darker characters to the big screen via the Suicide Squad.
The Suicide Squad story-line features fan favorite villains coming together in one comic book event and basking in their own spotlight as they get hired by the US government to eradicate other criminals. Fans will be happy to know that some of the most recognizable characters will be given life in the movie. The biggest buzz so far is Jared Leto's take on The Joker. It is rumored to be really creepy and sinister, probably more psychotic than Heath Ledger's Joke.
Other confirmed characters include Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Boomerang, Enchantress, Deathstroke, and Rick Flagg, among others. It is even reported that Killer Croc will make an appearance in the film. Villain overload, in a good way.
The Suicide Squad movie is currently in production stage and director David Ayer is leading an ensemble cast playing the notorious villains. Confirmed cast include Jared Leto as the Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingnne as Enchantress, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jim Parrack as Deathstroke, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Scott Eastwood as Steve Trevor, and Adam Beach as Slipknot. Other confirmed cast with roles not yet revealed are Ike Barinholtz, and Karen Fukuhara.
With an ensemble cast and interesting storyline unique from most superhero action films, will the Suicide Squad usher in a new trend of anti-hero action flicks? Darker characters and complicated story arcs, along with psychotic protagonists, Suicide Squad is slated for theatrical release on August 5, 2016.
