Google unleashes a revolution this April 21 that is set to change the way websites are ranked as users search through their phones. This radical change is warmly named Google Mobilegeddon because it is expected to "put an end" to millions of websites and their Google mobile search rankings. Moreover, from the look of things this Mobilegeddon becomes the first step to transform internet experience sooner than expected.
The formula Google has in mind is quiet simple. Tweaks in search algorithm favours websites that are mobile-friendly such as those with large texts, or those that easily fit any screen size. Google allows websites like these to rank higher during mobile searches and as repercussions, those sites not mobile-friendly enough soon becomes archaic.
Google announced the plan back in February which gives site developers ample time to tailor their websites and thwart them from falling off the rank. Despite this, come April 21 sites expect a major shake-off with rankings.
Google Mobilegeddon is a brainchild that comes from recent trends where 60% of online traffic is generated from mobile searches. Google likes to showcase why it remains the best search engine site by making sure google.com users experience the best while on a mobile search.
"I think the people who are at risk are those who don't know about it. Come April 21, a lot of small businesses are going to be really surprised that the number of visitors to their websites has dropped significantly. This is going to affect millions of sites on the web," mentions an owner of a small business who runs a website online in an interview with BusinessInsider.
The overhaul is seen nonetheless more as an advantage than a major backlash. Google Mobilegeddon emphasizes the importance of content, presentation and user-friendliness of a website. Succinctly put, a user's mobile search experience is Google's top precedence.
