Jerry Sandusky has been sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison, after being convicted on June 22 of 45 counts related to child sexual abuse. In handing down the sentence, Judge John Cleland called Sandusky, "dangerous, saying he betrayed children and abused their trust," ESPN reported.
Although a door has closed on Sandusky, Penn State's legal troubles relating to its handling of reports about his alleged sexual assaults promise to continue for some time. At least four alleged victims have sued the ivy-league university, according to ESPN, and "eight legal teams representing at least 20 young men have surfaced."
The 68-year-old former Penn State assistant football coach will have to serve the minimum of 30 years, according to Pennsylvania law.
Penn State's Com Radio aired an audio statement recorded by Sandusky the night before his conviction. In it, he states, "a young man who was dramatic a veteran accuser, and always sought attention, started everything. He was joined by a well-orchestrated effort of the media, investigators, the system, Penn State, psychologists, civil attorneys and other accusers. They won."
Allegations that Sandusky had sexually assaulted underage boys at or near the university first started coming out last year and he was arrested in November following an extensive investigation. As the number of cases grew, additional allegations against the university also began to surface, claiming that officials helped to cover up the assaults. Ultimately, these led to the university's president's resignation.
Sandusky was indicted on 52 counts of child molestation from 1994 to 2009.
