Scarlett Johansson of late gave her perspective on the cult classic anime 'Ghost in the Shell'. The titular role for live-action adaptation was offered to the 30-year-old BAFTA winner last year.
Johansson spoke with Collider and was upbeat about the film production's progress: "It will be shooting the beginning of next year, so I think we start production January or February and it's me and Rupert [Sanders], and that's all I know."
'Ghost in the Shell' like most mediums being considered for a live-action adaptation in the Hollywood big screen, also had its own share of many stalled attempts. This is a real big step forward for Dreamworks and Touchstone who have put together a creative nucleus around the actress. The team will be headed by Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders and writer William Wheeler of Reluctant Fundamentalist fame.
The actress was said to be offered $10 million to take on a much more diverse action suit as Major Motoko Kusanagi, of she officially signed to star this past January. Other essential notes in the upcoming project are that it will be produced by Avi Arad and Steven Paul with Mark Sourian as executive producer. The actress has proven herself to be quite both a box-office superheroine lure (The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man 2, Lucy) and a critics' darling in Jonathan Glazer's arthouse scifi film Under the Skin.
The immortal manga series of Masamune Shirow was first published in 1989. A post-cyber punk future set in 2029 which revolves around an elite team of law enforcement dubbed as Public Security Section 9. This said division is led on the field by the aformentioned Kusanagi who is a full cyborg along with her other cybernitecally enhanced colleagues. Their tasks are to combat cybercrime and cyberterrorism in a dystopian setting, wherein most members of the public have cyberkinetic implants installed within their susceptible brains.
