Called a "pioneer in Olympic BMX," 33-year-old Kyle Bennett, a three-time BMX world champion died in a tragic car wreck early Sunday morning near Houston, Texas.
According to a Montgomery County police reporter, as reported by Yahoo Sports, his Toyota Tundra pick-up truck veered off a road into a ditch, ultimately hitting an iron gate at a high speed. Yahoo Sports also reported that Bennett was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a newspaper.
Although he didn't make it to the final round, Bennett earned an automatic spot on the BMX biking team in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the sport's debut, Bloomberg News reported. He was nicknamed "Butter" for his smooth style.
"All of us at USA Cycling were deeply saddened to learn this morning of the tragic and untimely loss of Kyle Bennett," said USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson in a statement. "Kyle was a pioneer in Olympic BMX and an inspiration to those of us that knew him. He will be sorely missed, and we offer our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."
Bennett is survived by his fiancé and his daughter Kylie.
