By

Summer's a fun time for many people, but at the risk of dishing out negativity, there are at least 12 reasons to hate summer:

  • Foodborne illness. When the temperature rises, so does the incidence of foodborne illnesses, if you're not careful in preparing food. Bad bacteria may flourish fast at temperatures hovering between 90 and 100 degrees, so take preventive measures like avoiding cross-contamination and cooking meat very well.
  • Deadly ticks. Be wary of ticks that settle on domestic dogs, or which people can get through hiking, gardening or camping. The tiny bloodsuckers may also cause Lyme disease that can render a person weak and even immobile.
  • Sun's ultraviolet rays . Prolonged exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn & premature aging of skin and cancer. Being frequently exposed to the sun also leads to dry, leathery skin and wrinkles.
  • Mosquito bites. Disease-carrying mosquitoes may abound in places where there's stagnant water, such as pots or old tires, so clean up spots in your home. Use a natural insect repellent.
  • Allergens. During summer, there are lots of annoying stuff that scream allergy. Pollen, bees, dust mites, and even personal care products can cause allergies.
  • Heat exhaustion. Heavy sweating, fatigue, and dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion, so know the telltale signs when the body is unable to cool itself efficiently.
  • Vehicular accidents. Accidents caused by motorists' road rage, or catastrophes tend to peak during the summer months.
  • Falls & sprains. Enjoying the great outdoors, or puttering around in your own home during summer can lead to accidental falls & sprains.
  • Carcinogenic food. Summer barbecues may present dangers you're unaware of, like carcinogens that form from grilling meat in an open flame.
  • Poisons. Whether you're indoors or in the woodlands, you need to be aware of substances that can be poisonous, including plants.
  • Smog. Inflammation of the airways due to smog may be manifested bycoughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, or asthmatic attacks.
  • Drowning accidents. Certain places have records of a rise in drowning incidents during summer. Hence, constant vigilance is a must.

Summer can be a great time to unwind and enjoy moments with your family, but for some people, these 12 reasons to hate summer can deter fun.
