What is Celiac Disease? Blue Bloods' Jennifer Esposito Tweets about CBS Treatment Relating to her Celiac Disease

By

Celiac disease has cost Blue Bloods' star Jennifer Esposito her job, at least temporarily.

CBS released a statement saying Esposito, who plays Detective Jackie Curatola, "informed us [CBS] that she is only available to work on a very limited part-time schedule. As a result, she's unable to perform the demands of her role and we regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence," according to Yahoo News.

In response, Esposito, tweeted, "CBS put me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doctor said you needed a reduced schedule due to Celiac. CBS didn't listen to my doc and I collapsed on set. Which everyone saw! After a week off my doc said I could return to work but CBS implied that I was not truly ill and this was a scheme to get a raise! It's been almost two months without bringing me back to work + keeping Me from working anywhere else!... Absolutely shameful behavior," as reported by Yahoo.

Esposito, 39, is an outspoken advocate for people with the disease, which affects three million Americans, according to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness.

Celiac disease is a digestive condition that is triggered by eating protein gluten, according to the Mayo Clinic. For people with the disease, eating gluten, which is found in bread, pasta, cookies, etc. triggers an immune reaction in the small intestines causing damage to the intestine and an inability to absorb some nutrients.

In addition to abdominal pain and diarrhea, long-term effects if the condition is not treated can include osteoporosis, tooth enamel defects, central and peripheral nervous system disease, pancreatic disease, internal hemorrhaging, and organ disorders, according to the University Of Maryland Medical Center.

For now, the last episode of Blue Blood with Esposito will air Nov. 2.
