Johnny Depp transforms into a vicious mobster in his latest movie. Black Mass is about the life of feared Mob Boss Whitey Bulger and his abuse of power and game of loyalties.
In the movie Black Mass, Johnny Depp plays one of the most notorious gangsters America has ever seen. The movie, based on a true story, shows the life and exploits of one Whitey Bulger, a Boston Mob boss who becomes an FBI informant. The barely recognizable Depp is transformed into the mobster's likeness, with intense blue eyes, semi-bald and graying blonde hair, and a little on the heavy side.
The story follows events from the 70s to the 90s when Whitey Bulger was active as a mob boss in the Boston area. He was feared during that time until rival mobsters started competing for territory. Bulger is shown playing with power as his brother is a state senator and he has associates in the FBI. But as rival mobs become more and more uncontrollable, Bulger turns to the FBI and becomes an informant, for the wrong reasons. Turning to the FBI for Bulger was never about eradicating crime, but rather getting rid of the competition.
Black Mass is deemed as the next big gangster movie after the likes of the Godfather, Scarface, and Goodfellas. The movie delves deep into the mob life with a more modern perceptive than the previously mentioned movies. But of course, that will largely be dependent on how well the movie will be received by critics and movie-goers. But this early, Johnny Depp is already receiving praise for his portrayal of Bulger. The film's director Scott Cooper was all praises for the actor during the recent CinemaCon, goings as far as claiming that it was Depp's "performance for the ages."
Set to be released on September 18 this year, Black Mass boasts of an intense storyline, and a Johnny Depp we've never seen before.
