Warner Bros. Pictures has just picked up the rights and is going into development on a feature film adaptation of the popular game, Five Nights at Freddy's. Five nights at Freddy's challenges players to survive for five nights as a security guard in a demented pizza entertainment restaurant where homicidal and possessed animatronics roam the halls in search of their next victim.
This is a video game where it has become a cult hit and the following is tremendous.Five nights at freddy's is set in a family fast food restaurant ala Chuck E. Cheese, where animatronic robots entertain by day and become twisted killers at night. Its developer Scott Cawthon had this to say to The Hollywwod Reporter:
"The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,"
In the long list of video games that have been turned into movies, the reception has not been too kind. Fans of the games start to nitpick and they always feel the movie pales in comparison. I don't understand why that is. Maybe it is harder to turn a video game into a movie than a comic book or maybe these hardcore fans of the games just refuse to see anything else. Whatever the case may be, this one has got potential and should be given a chance.
It should be an exciting time for horror fans and gamers alike because this movie could get the credibility of games crossing over to movies. We're still waiting for that to happen. Final Fantasy: The Spirits within was the most well-received of the bunch but i think hollywood can do better. Hopefully, this movie finally hits the spot.
Five Nights at Freddy's will be produced by Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee, same guy who made Run All Night with Liam Neeson and the release of The Conjuring 2: Poltergeist. The script is still a work in progress but production should begin later this year. They are aiming for a 2016 release.
