DC creates heavy buzz around the internet this weekend as the official trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released. Suicide Squad director David Ayer's tweet of Jared Leto as Joker creates a new layer to the character.
The official trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been revealed. While the trailer does not clearly show other DC characters, fans begin to speculate on a possible appearance of Jason Momoa's Aquaman and Jared Leto's Joker. Aquaman is scheduled for release in 2018, while Suicide Squad recently started filming. David Ayer brings the anti-hero team to life in the wake of his 2014 World War II film Fury.
Jared Leto is known for his selective roles and method acting, depicting his characters to the core. His most recent portrayal of AIDS patient and transgender woman Rayon alongside Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner in Dallas Buyers Club (2013) earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also fronts the band 30 Seconds to Mars with his brother, Shannon Leto.
Ayer's tweet reveals Leto as the Joker sporting green hair and diabolical tattoos, with "deranged" branded apropos on his forehead. Leto's adaptation of the Joker reeks of madness, mania and malice. His mouth, open in silent shriek or disturbed delight, is partially encased in silver caps.
A buzz around the internet has fans wondering about his influences in order to render his version of the malevolent Joker, as it is quite removed from Heath Ledger's or Jack Nicholson's constructs. Beyond other comics and Frank Miller's edition, Leto's Joker looks heavily influenced by Marilyn Manson and the 2003 album Golden Age of Grotesque, along with its consequent releases of album singles, music videos, and later tour.
David Ayer's tweet this weekend commemorates the 75th anniversary of the notorious Clown Prince of Crime, and raised expectations for DC's Suicide Squad. When Warner Bros released the cast list for Suicide Squad, fans and critics were positive with Leto's selection as the Joker.
Suicide Squad has started its first week of filming, and fans' interests in the other characters increase the buzz on the third installment to the DC Comics' shared universe. Fans are hopeful that the rest of the cast will get a similar photo to complete the crime-centric cast of crazy characters.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2016. Suicide Squad is scheduled to premiere August 5th 2016.
