Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel. She assumed the identity when a Kree alien by the name of Captain Mar-vell passed along his powers to her accidentally before dying. Known throughout most of her life as Ms Marvel she eventually adopted the mantle of Captain Marvel. She will have an integral role in Marvel's phase 3 Avengers: Infinity Wars.
The arrival of Marvel's phase 3 is sure to bring groundbreaking changes to its superhero genre but it will not be without its challenges. Selling characters to the world that are more unknown than the Guardians of the Galaxy or Black Panther is a difficult task.
Selling Captain Marvel could prove to be the most difficult yet, not because she will be the first female Marvel cinematic universe character to get her own film but because Carol Danvers introduction will be the final pin before phase 3's massive conclusion: Infinity Wars.
Captain Marvel was not easy to get greenlighted as a project because in the world of superheroes, she is relatively unknown. Fans barely know about her. That may not be the case anymore as Marvel has done a wonderful job marketing their characters but a few years ago only hardcore fans would remember her.
Kelly Sue DeConnick, the woman mainly responsible for Capatin Marvel being greenlighted as a movie said at Wondercon 2012 that her sales pitch could be summed up as "Carol Danvers as Chuck Yeager." She added that this movie will show what the real Captain Marvel's legend means to Danvers, how she wields her power and how the rest of the Marvel universe accepts her. The next movie she will appear in will be Infinity Wars and will be one of the leads.
The Captain Marvel feature film will be released in 2018 but word around the campfire is that she might make an appearance before then in the next Captain America movie. They have been really hush hush about the cast but the most prominent name rumored to play Captain Marvel is Emily Blunt. Other actors are vying for the role but Marvel has always been good at keeping things under the radar.
Negotiations are ongoing and production has not started yet. Nicole Perlman who co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy, is in talks to pen the script for the company's first female driven movie. We do know that Joss Whedon will be holding the reins so we can rest knowing we are in very capable hands. The Captain Marvel release date will be July 6, 2018. Time to mark that calendar.
