'Ghostbusters' Reboot, Cast News: Spin-off to crossover with '21 Jump Street?' Dakota Johnson rumored for starring role

By

The Ghostbusters reboot gathered a ton of buzz for its all-female cast: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. And as Ghostbusters moves closer to its eventual release next summer, other franchises are starting to adopt that same all-female strategy.

The latest film to go all-women is 21 Jump Street. While the first two films (21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street) have been wildly popular with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill in the lead roles, and a third film is in the works, Sony is also pushing forward with a female 21 Jump Street film. According to Screen Crush, the film will be similar in tone and structure to the Tatum/Hill films, with two bumbling cops going undercover. It will be written by Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs, two writers from Comedy Central's Broad City.

As well, a rumor from Screen Crush points to Dakota Johnson, who starred in the first 21 Jump Street film (and was later catapulted into fame by Fifty Shades of Grey) as the spin-off's main character. Johnson played Fugazy, another undercover cop in the film, which would be an excellent bridge into another spin-off.

Could 21 Jump Street's spinoff crossover into Sony's Ghostbusters reboot? It's entirely possible. According to Dan Aykroyd, who starred in the original Ghostbusters films and is spearheading the new films, he wants as many Ghostbusters films as possible.

"We need as many ['Ghostbusters' films] as the artists want to produce with the concept. I mean, it's kind of like the Marvel series. There's opportunities here to do different types of stories," Aykroyd said.

Sony's already rumored to be crossing over the Men in Black and the 21 Jump Street franchises, as well they have two Ghostbusters films in the works: one with the all-female cast and one with Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt. For all we know, Men in Black, 21 Jump Street and Ghostbusters could all become the same franchise one day.

Sony's Ghostbusters reboot will release on July 22, 2016.
