The long awaited sequel to Independence Day has finally been confirmed. And director Roland Emmerich has turned to social media to announce the actors who are joining the Independence Day 2 cast.
The 1996 film will finally get a sequel, and a lot of the original cast are coming back to reprise their role. It will still be directed by original director Roland Emmerich, and there will also be additional new members of the cast who will be joining the team. Independence Day 2 is set for release next year, and shooting starts by May of this year.
Confirmed to return as cast member is Jeff Goldblum, who reprises his role as MIT graduate David Levinson who intercepts alien transmissions that aim to destroy the planet. Another returning cast member is Judd Hirsch who plays Levinson's father Julius. Bill Pullman is also back onboard as Thomas J. Whitmore, although there is still not confirmation if he will still play the President of the United States as the story will take place 20 years after the first film. These three were confirmed through Emmerich's Twitter and Facebook posts. Other confirmed returning cast members include Brent Spiner, and Vivica A. Fox.
Will Smith has not yet been confirmed if he will come back as Capt. Steven Hiller, but it seems that the script has already been set up to add new cast member Jessie Usher to play Smith's son. Emmerich confirmed that other new cast members to join the film are Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Joey King. What roles they play in Independence Day 2, though, are not yet clear.
The movie's plot has not yet been revealed, although it has been confirmed that the setting would be 20 years after the first film's events, and Earth again prepares for another alien invasion.
Set for release on June 24, 2016, with the cast (almost) complete and in place, Independence Day 2 starts filming this May.
