X-Men: Apocalypse is going to be the final film in the X-Men trilogy that first started with Matthew Vaughan's X-Men: First Class in 2011. But it might be even more than that- the upcoming X-Men sequel, starring Oscar Isaac as the titular villain, Apocalypse, may be the film to finally end the original X-Men franchise for good.
The rumor comes from Screen Crush, who claim (via El Mayimbe) that Bryan Singer, who directed the original X-Men film in 2000 and has continued to be a major part of the franchise for the last 15 years, is considering destroying the franchise and the universe in this final X-Men film. Adding to the rumor is the upcoming X-Men spinoff, the third in a row to feature Wolverine. Hugh Jackman has already come out and admit that he will not be playing Wolverine after Apocalypse and the final Wolverine spin-off. At that point, there may be nothing left of the franchise to continue making sequels out of.
Bryan Singer also spoke to Empire about the film and the destructive power of Apocalypse, who will threaten not only the X-Men but the entire Earth. "It's a big monster of a movie," Singer said to Empire. "The stakes are so high and global and the villain is so mythic. It's definitely an X-Men movie, but it really feels different."
The film will also be going back to the original X-Men featured in Singer's original X-Men films, but as younger versions of themselves.
"They're as much a part of the movie as our main cast. Scott is not yet the squeaky-clean leader. Storm is a troubled character who is going down the wrong path in life. And Jean is complex, interesting and not fully mature. It's fun to see someone struggling with their powers when you know one day they'll become the most powerful person in the world."
Cyclops will be played by Tye Sheridan, Jean Grey will be played by Sophie Turner, Storm will be played by Alexandra Shipp and Kodi Smit-McPhee will play Nightcrawler. New concept art released to Empire (and seen above) shows the villain Archangel, who may bring about the apocalypse with... well, Apocalypse.
X-Men: Apocalypse will premiere on May 19, 2016.
