Playstation 4 sales spike upward sending company profits to even greater heights

By

Playstation 4 sales have helped keep Sony in better financial shape going forward, and a lot of it has been due in large part to the impressive performance of the Games Division.

Since April of last year, the company's Games Division has turned in over $404 million of operating profit, a robust figure within the video game industry.

The impressive number was helped in large part by the sales of the Playstation 4 itself, according to Gamespot. Since April of 2014, the console has reached 14.8 million units all over the world, and by the time April of 2016 arrives, the company expects the number to settle at around 16 million units sold.

Operating income for Playstation also reached $401 million, which is no small feat considering the pit it rose from when the number at last year's time was languishing at an overall loss of right around $78 million, according to IGN.

It's not all good news for Playstation however, as both the PS Vita and the Playstation TV suffered a decrease in sales. Combined sales for both dropped all the way to 3.3 million after eclipsing over 4.1 the previous year. Sales are also down for the Playstation 3, but that's hardly unexpected given the success of the company's current gen console in the Playstation 4.

Overall, Sony managed to rake in over $576 million of operating profit for the financial year ending on March 31, 2015, a figure which constitutes a 159 percent increase from the previous financial year.

As for one of the Playstation 4's closest competitors, it looks as though the Xbox One is becoming more competitive in terms of sales. While the Playstation 4 is still outpacing the Xbox One in terms of sales, the rate at which it has managed to do has decreased, if even just a little, according to Ars Technica.

In the first quarter of 2014, the Playstation 4 outsold the Xbox One by 1.8 million units, the figure this year has now shrunk to 1.2, which is still a healthy margin, but a step in the right direction nonetheless for the Xbox One.

Time will tell if the shrinking gap is a trend or merely an aberration.
