'Cube' Reboot gets a Working Title 'Cubed', Saman Kesh to direct film as script is all set; Plot reveals another twist?

Cube, the 1997 sci-fi thriller film that launched the career of Vincenzo Natali, is reportedly scheduled for a reboot. The film is still pretty much a concept, with no other details available yet except that of the screenplay and the director.

As with recent trends of rebooting or reimagining movies, LionsGate is joining the club as it looks to reboot a certain sci-fi thriller that it produced almost 20 years ago. The film is Cube, a direct-to-DVD film that helped launch the career of director Vincenzo Natali. Although it did not get that much mainstream attention, it was, at that time, quite revolutionary and inspired some of today's thriller movies.

The plot is quite simple - seven strangers with very different personalities find themselves trapped in a giant cube. Of course, they start off confused, having to wake up out of the blue and finding themselves trapped in a huge cube where they each need to solve complex puzzles to be able to escape. Plus there is the moral dilemma of saving oneself or helping others.

This reboot, with the rumored working title Cubed, will use the very same concept, except that it will be re-imagined to include artificial intelligence elements. The original film has already spawned both a sequel (Cube 2: Hypercube) and a prequel (Cube Zero), also direct-to-DVD films, but did not get the same acclaim as the first Cube movie. Both were also not associated in any way with Natali.

Cubed's script is reportedly being penned by Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts, who is also involved with the screenplay for Doctor Strange and a reboot of The Mummy. The film will be directed by newbie Saman Kesh, and will be produced by The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee.

The film is, as of the moment, at a its earliest stage, and complete details regarding the plot and cast are not yet available. Even its release date has not yet been formally set. But if this film does get the green light, we'll surely get to learn more details about it.
