The HTC One Mini and HTC One Mini 2 will not be getting the Android 5.0 update.
HTC tweeted a response to a user who inquired when the HTC One Mini 2 will be getting an OTA push for the update and said, "We determined that Lollipop on the One Mini 2 will not provide an optimal experience; it isn't scheduled to receive the update."
The main reason cited is hardware limitation, and that the HTC One Mini and HTC One Mini 2, released August 2013 and May 2014 respectively, might not handle Android 5.0 properly.
For specs, the HTC One Mini 2 has a dimension of 137.4 x 65 x 10.6mm and 137g weight. It has a 4.5-inch Super LCD2 capacitive touchscreen display, a 13MP main clicker, 5MP front cam and a non-removable 2110 mAh Li-Po battery.
Under the hood, the HTC Mini One 2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset with a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU and an Adreno 305 GPU. It has 1GB RAM, and an internal storage of 16GB which is expandable up to 128GB via microSD. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat.
HTC One Mini has lower overall specs and runs on Android 4.2 Jellybean.
However, some noted that Motorola did a fine job with pushing the Android 5.0 update on its First Gen Moto G which has similar specs to the HTC One Mini 2.
Could the HTC Sense UI be the culprit? Either way, the announcement from HTC sparked angry remark from users who claimed HTC has a very poor software support and development team for not making things work out. The very discontented ones did not hide their disgust and even threatened to switch to competitor phones.
The unofficial custom version of the Android 5.0 Lollipop, however, is made available by the CyanogenMod team via CyanogenMod 12 (CM12) ROM. This is alternative is for those who really know what they're doing with their phones and are willing to take the risk.
Who knows? Maybe HTC will change its stance on the Android 5.0 update for the HTC One Mini 2.
