'Mr. Holmes' Movie Update: Sir Ian McKellen Leads the Cast; Trailer reveals an Ageing Sherlock

By

A new movie about the amazing Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Holmes focuses on the detective's life as an aging man, living the last of his years in the countryside. Portrayed by the brilliant sir Ian McKellen, Holmes lives a peaceful life in tending his bees but is still haunted by a cold case that lead to his retirement.

This time, the film is not based on any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's book, but rather on a novel by Mitch Cullin called A Slight Trick of the Mind. In Mr. Holmes, the trailer shows the detective in a different light. The film shows him to be an old man, trying to live a peaceful life in the countryside tending to his bees and being accompanies by his housekeeper and her son Roger. Holmes strikes a friendship with the boy and becomes reliant on him as his once brilliant mind is slowly failing him. Being haunted by the last unsolved case that forced him into retirement, he tries to revisit the circumstances surrounding it and at the process rediscovers the mysteries of life and love.

The trailer also shows how our image of Holmes could have been affected by his friend Dr. Watson's fabrication, showing an amused Holmes at watching a film about himself. He is even shown chuckling that he prefers cigars over pipes.

Directed by Bill Condon of Dreamgirls and the last two Twilight films, Mr. Holmes shows the detective in a different light than what he is usually presented by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, so this is a pretty interesting film for fans out there.

The film stars Sir Ian McKellen as Mr. Holmes, and Laura Linney as his housekeeper. The film also stars Milo Parker, Hattie Morahan, Frances de la Tour, Patrick Kennedy, Philip Davis, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Roger Allam.

With a re-imagined story and view of the great detective, Mr. Holmes is set to open in theaters on July 17.
