After wrapping up its fourth season with Schmidt's proposal to Cece and Coach's departure, New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether gave a scoop on the season that's on the horizon -an engagement party for the couple who are about tie the knot and a 4 'No Girl' episodes for lead star Zooey Deschanel's pregnancy.
Following New Girl Season 3 Finale, Coach moves in with his girlfriend, May (Maeghan Rath). A surprising last minute engagement between Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) was revealed after four years of being on and off.
"We felt like we'd gone back and forth with them so many times. It felt like time to allow them to be together in a real way, to let the audience know that it's going to be something permanent. Which is exciting," Meriwether told AV Club in an interview.
As for what's going to happen next for the two, Greenfield already dished his character's engagement saying "I think the obvious is that now that they're engaged - we've been to 700 weddings on this show. We're actually going to have our first in-house wedding, and I think it becomes about planning the wedding,"
However, Meriwether explained that their road to their engagement will not be an easy one.
In another interview, the New Girl creator mentioned "The thing that we'll explore in season 5 is them getting to know each other's families and getting to know each other. There are still issues between them."
"In the premiere, we meet Cece's mom (Anna George) and obviously it's a hard relationship to explain to any parent," the creator added.
Still, the biggest news of all was lead Zooey Deschanel's (Jess) pregnancy. With several episodes for the upcoming fifth season already filmed, Meriwether says the titular New Girl will not be seen for four episodes when the show returns this fall.
"There's an explanation of why she disappears for four episodes. We're not pretending that she's still there. You can definitely play the game in the first four episodes of season 5 of trying to spot her pregnant belly if you really want to. You'll notice in the premiere that she spends a little bit of time on a scooter," Meriwether teased.
"The first episode without her is actually called 'No Girl,'" Meriwether says of the star, who's taking off a few episodes.
It may be difficult to believe that the FOX hit comedy series had been aired long enough to achieve this, but Elizabeth Meriwether's New Girl will acually be hitting its 100th episode on the fifth season. Fox still did not announce officially when the series will be returning, but since shooting is ongoing, the viewers will presumably be getting "New Girl" episodes next fall.
