George R.R. Martin is now feeling the heat when it comes to trying to complete Winds of Winter, especially with season five of Game of Thrones drawing closer to the novel's current endpoint.
Martin has said that he would like to release the book now if he could, but also admits that saying he could do so at the moment would be overly optimistic. The author is clearly prioritizing Winds of Winter though, as he has canceled several appearances and has begun turning down interview commitments in order to complete the book, according to Day Herald.
Martin said he was making fine progress with the book until he was forced to shelve its completion in lieu of editing, touring, and other commitments involving the promotion of his creation. The author has been writing Winds of Winter for years now, but the long wait between books is nothing new for fans familiar with his work.
It's widely believed that the current season of Game of Thrones will provide the point at which the TV series will officially deviate from the novels in part because of necessity, according to MTV. Martin has also shared the creative troubles he has experienced while trying to finish Winds of Winter. He has said that while at times he feels as though he has created something special, there are also times when has been tempted to scrap what he had done so far and simply start from scratch, according to Ecumenical News.
Though the author is still not committing to any official release date for Winds of Winter, he has indicated that he wishes to release the book prior to season six of the show starting next year. While Martin has begun opening up more about his creative process and the struggles he faces while he is writing, the author is still reluctant to actually reveal any new details about the book.
Fans will simply have to wait until Martin releases of Winds of Winter to find out where the story heads next.
