Telltale Games' The Walking Dead season one video game ended a few weeks ago and fans are still reeling from the finale. But developers see it as a "necessary end" to begin a whole new adventure for the next season.
The Walking Dead video game by Telltale Games is not your regular zombie shooting game. It was an ambitious project that aimed to be an interactive game, not just for the action and adventure it offers but more importantly, for the chance it gives players to make choices throughout the game. Its creators wanted to focus on moral choices a person will face in a real apocalyptic situation. And these choices will also affect future interactions of the players in the game.
Throughout the Walking Dead game, players are faced with different situations where they need to make choices that will affect the game's course. Players start off as Lee, a convicted murderer about to serve his sentence just as the apocalypse happens. From then on, being the main antagonist, payers use Lee's character to move around in the game. Situations then arise for Lee to make choices and the course of the game will then be dependent on those choices.
Before the middle of the season, Lee becomes guardian Clementine, whose parents had fallen victim to the walkers. Players will then spend majority of the season guiding and training Clementine, staying alive as they move around to survive. But before the last episode, To The Bitter End, Clementine gets kidnapped and Lee needs to rescue her. To make things complicated, the kidnapper gets bitten and Lee has to get to Clementine before he turns into a zombie.
And things get even worse, as Lee gets bitten, and the choice is left to Clementine: she could shoot Lee before he reanimates, or she could leave him as he turns into a zombie. Either way, he's dead. But Clementine's choice, to kill him or leave him, will have an impact on how the game will progress on to season 2. This finale has left a lot of fans in disbelief, but the creators over at Telltale say Lee's death was necessary to pave way for the next chapter of Clementine's story to begin. The end of season one marks the beginning of Clementine's own journey and introduces season 2.
Telltale Games is known for story-driven games and The Walking Dead is no exception. If you haven't played the last episode To the Bitter End yet, prepare yourself for the end and be ready to make the one choice that will shape Clementine's future.
