You may have read, back in the mass of leaked emails from the Sony hacking scandal, that Sony was considering a series of films based around Nintendo franchises- an updated Mario film, as well as a film about the Super Smash Bros franchise. The news was baffling for a lot of reasons- for one, Sony and Nintendo are nothing if not bitter rivals in the gaming industry (although it's not as likely that Sony's film division was particularly bitter against Nintendo). As well, the last time someone made a Super Mario film, it went down as one of the most embarassing motion pictures ever made.
And yet, the plans were made regardless. We've yet to hear anything new from Sony or Nintendo on this matter for a long time; likely, the plans for Super Smash Bros: The Movie are dead in the water. But what would a Super Smash Bros film have looked like?
It's possible that the story could have followed one of the stories of the games. Super Smash Bros has little in the way of an actual narrative, but there are elements that almost hint at a story. The idea that the characters are all toys being controlled by the hands of an enormous, unseen figure. Or the Subspace Emissary mode from Super Smash Bros Brawl.
Likely, though it'd be easier just to create a story from scratch. Fighting games have been made into films before- Mortal Kombat has gone through more than one film adaptation, and the same goes for Street Fighter (although the most recent, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, is just about as awful as the Super Mario Bros movie). The film would need to be animated, obviously, considering that mixing characters (and more importantly, art styles) from so many Nintendo franchises would be far more difficult in live-action. What do you think? Could a Super Smash Bros movie work at all? Are Nintendo and Sony sitting on a gold mine, or wisely sidestepping a massive box-office bomb?
