Agents of SHIELD wasn't particulary well-received in its first season (although the last few episodes certainly picked up in quality), but its second season has seen a massive increase in positive press and fan recognition. Even if the second season's ratings haven't been as wonderful.
And recently, it was revealed that Marvel and ABC were pursuing a spin-off of Agents of SHIELD, specifically focusing on the characters of Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki). Well, it's just been revealed that the spin-off is officially dead. ABC recently renewed Agents of SHIELD for a third season and Agent Carter for a second, but any plans for a Hunter/Morse spy-couple spin-off are dead in the water.
It doesn't seem like many are mourning the show's premature cancellation. Hunter and Morse are a satisfying part of Agents of SHIELD, for sure, but they didn't really seem strong enough (or unique enough characters) to justify an entire series devoted just to them. Maybe the upcoming Agents of SHIELD finale, S.O.S., might put the two characters in a new situation that would justify a spin-off series, however- something to look out for in next week's finale.
Blood and Palicki joined Agents of SHIELD this season as part of a group of mercenaries recruited to SHIELD after the agency was crippled following the events of the first season (and Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Presumably, with the spin-off's cancellation, they'll continue forward as a part of Agents of SHIELD's third season.
Marvel and ABC have a few other shows in the pipeline- a series from 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ridley, and their quintet of shows on Neflix: Daredevil, AKA Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. The Agents of SHIELD finale will air this Tuesday on ABC, at 8:00.
