CSI has been one of the most wildly successful shows in recent television history, and with the finish line appearing on the horizon, it looks as though the series may end with a final TV movie.

The show has already had an incredibly successful run, by almost any measure. With 15 seasons under its belt, and at least one more on the way, the show has the established track record which should allow to go down as a no doubt about it legend in TV history. This is what makes what CBS chooses to do for a finale all the more fascinating.

Some of the most pertinent rumors concerning the show have it either being renewed for another go 'round or ending at the conclusion of its 16th season. The rumors even suggest that the 16th and would be final season would be a shortened one at that.

Recently however, the new leader in the clubhouse in terms of how the series might ulimately end is via tha TV movie route, according to Deadline. The two hour movie would likely feature the show's creators, Ann Donahue and Anthony Zuiker at the helm, but at the moment at least, this rumor is not confirmed.

Aside from the TV movie, other scenarios being discussed for the finale of the series include a true-to-form 13 episode final run, a shorter six episode season, and even one last four episode season concluding with the TV movie.

If the series will indeed end with a TV movie, Entertainment Weekly reports that one of the show's original stars, William Petersen, might also make a comeback. Petersen starred on the show during its first nine seasons.

In related news, CSI: Cyber, one of the show's spin-offs, is likely to be renewed for a second season, according to the AV Club.

CSI: Cyber stars Patricia Arquette and James Van Der Beek.
