General Motors Co. has selected AT&T Inc. to provide high-speed wireless service for its 2015 auto models, setting an end of its deal with long-term service provider Verizon Wireless.
The move reflects the aim of GM to expand offerings to include improvised applications such as video streaming for the passengers of its car models including Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Chevrolet in the hope of hope of boosting OnStar subscriptions and car sales.
GM executive director Phil Abram said in a statement that the auto maker giant is looking for opportunities in possibilities such as sending customer alerts on engine flaws or sending data such as videos from the automobile to the mobile device of owner through wireless service.
General Motors declined to explain the reason about the switching but said that Verizon, which has been its wireless provider since 1996, will still provide services of OnStar for all existing cars or any new models before the launch of 2015 models, which are expected to enter the market in mid-2014.
