Wirecard, the biggest payment systems provider in Germany has announced that it has been chosen by Vodafone to carry the mobile carrier's payment system. The Munich based service provider would assist in the introduction of the British telecom's mobile payment service to be rolled out to Vodafone's clientele.
The partnership would involve the creation, execution and operation of the technical mobile payment processing. This includes the issuance of Visa cards, both virtual and physical with the Vodafone brand name.
According to Dr. Christian Wirtz, Group Director of mCommerce, "Wirecard is a highly competent technology partner to implement our mobile payment service. We want to use our mobile wallet to offer customers contactless payments using their smartphones. We also attach great value to innovation for both our mobile offering and also for additional value added services."
For its part, Wirecard AG CEO Markus Braun said, "We are very pleased to be supporting Vodafone as a technical service partner and also a card issuer. Telecommunications providers will become part of the payment process with mobile wallets. They will thus become key drivers in a paradigm shift through to a cash-free society."
