Initially, Samsung's new Gear VR was hailed as a great leap forward. In short, promising - a huge improvement over its immediate predecessor, Samsung Note 4's Gear VR 1. But sadly, days after, a different story emerges. One that may douse the enthusiasm of millions of Samsung hopefuls who'd like to see a world more interesting than real-life.
Not only did negative reviews pile up, the new Gear VR has been branded worse than the product it aimed to improve. And for a market that is keen on beautiful sights and stunning vision, the evidence is apparent.
As things turn out, what used to be all-praise for the reinvigorated Gear VR has turned into all-ridicule. In but a span of days.
Lately, one poignant example posted on the Oculus site where one user reveled at the new product only to take back his words in disappointment days later. To note, Oculus is the maker of the Gear VR.
Initial review posted about 4 days ago:
"I just had to write a post to say how amazing this device is. I have not been so excited about a product since the first iPod. This device literally takes you into other worlds that you normally wouldn't enter. Yeah, the resolution needs improvement and there is still some screen door effect. But if I had to go to a deserted island and was given the rule that I could only take one thing, the Gear VR would be it."
Days after, the same user did a 360-degree turn-around saying:
"After a week with the device, I am taking back what I said. I wish I never gave up the Note 4 and Gear VR 1. The new Gear VR is awful in every way."
Wow! That was quick.
The greatest source of disappointment: fogging. As observed hazy view on the new Gear VR is worse than the first with an FOV (field of view) that is apparently way "too small". Making matters worse, is the light reflection which has since destroyed the Galaxy S6 Edge's reputation.
Yes, the picture on the new S6 series Gear VR may appear clearer but a clearer picture is no guarantee for a better more immersive VR experience. The verdict: smaller FOV, worse VR.
And as mentioned the Galaxy S6 configuration is making matter worse. Thanks to its curvier edge which allows more light to come in.
Luckily, this new Gear VR is still in development stage and is not yet available for public consumption. Dubbed the Innovator Edition, this VR device may yet evolve into a more immersive experience both for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge - in time.
