A documentary was recently released catering the life of the late Grammy Award Winner Amy Winehouse. The family of the late singer showed their disappointment indicating that the documentary showed allegations about the and the singer's management as something "unfounded and unbalanced."
During the midnight screening in Cannes last Saturday, Director of "Amy", the Amy Winehouse Biopic, defended their side of the story. He said that their film was only aimed at documenting the life of the late singer and did not intent to offend any person out of the production.
When Amy Winehouse's sudden death last 2011, she was already a self-proclaimed global celebrity. Apart from her success in the music industry, Winehouse's issues with alcohol and drug abuse were already apparent to the public. Furthermore, when the star was still alive, she indicated in an interview that she was not equipped to go famous and that she might not be able to contain herself if she was to become such.
The documentary first starts off showing Winehouse at an early age and successively showed her journey until she died last 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. It also shows several interviews with eighty people who were close to the star, collaborators and other people who had experience working with or interacting with the late music sensation.
Despite the clearly personal showing of Winehouse's life after getting famous, her family, especially her father Mitch Winehouse, relayed his reaction to the documentary as something that showed "unfounded and unbalanced" allegations about his daughter's management while she was alive and that of how the documentary reflected their family.
Despite the negative notion the Winehouse relayed with respect to the documentation, the film's producer James Gay-Reese indicated that he understood the stand of Mitch Winehouse for opposing the said documentation's message. Furhtermore, he also said that at the end of the day, Amy Winehouse's father had the right to feel what he felt when he saw the documentation because it is never really easy to see your daughter's life especially when the former had just lost her.
Kapadia, the documentation's director, also indicated that it was not their intention to upset anyone but only merely wanted to show what Amy Winehouse's life was behind the camera in a truthful and direct manner.
Despite the conflict between Amy Winehouse's family and that of the "Amy" producers and directors, it is evident that the film catered to remembering a true music icon who passed away too soon at the age of 27 last 2011. Given that the late star's family is upset, is legal action against the production just by the wings? Was the documentation proper or was the late Amy Winehouse depicted perfectly?
