Pirates of The Caribbean 5 already $70 million over budget due to possible issues with Depp

Pirates of The Caribbean is definitely going to be billed as a big-budget motion picture spectacular, and now it really has to be after the film just overshot its initial budget by over $70 million because of Johnny Depp.

Films going over budget are not a rarity, but this particular one has done so for reasons that seem to have been preventable. According to the Daily Telegraph Australia, one of the reasons why the film is now currently over budget is because additional productions costs were needed after Johnny Depp suffered a hand injury back in March.

Depp has yet to offer any official comment as to what caused the hand injury. The costs came up in part because production had to basically shut down with Depp unable to participate in the filming after the injury.

One delay probably would not have been enough to cost the production crew to go $70 million over its budget however, and that's why some are now pointing to the recent controversy surrounding Depp's dogs as yet another issue that may have led to additional costs, according to the Daily Mail. Shooting was delayed yet again by that most recent incident, and it has also reportedly added to the overall cost of making the film.

Since Depp is in most of the film's scenes, little to no shooting could be done while the star was off handling business concerning his dogs. There are still 14 weeks of shooting left for the movie, and even with the initial budget now just a distant reminder, cast and crew are still plowing ahead to make the film.

Filming is set to continue aboard The Black Pearl at the film's massive outdoor set in Helensvale, according to the Gold Coast Bulletin. More scenes are also expected to be filmed at the movie's other gigantic set in Maudsland some time later in the week.

Pirates of The Caribbean 5 is expected to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
