"Jack Reacher 2," the sequel to the 2012 blockbuster hit starring Tom Cruise has just been confirmed. As of late, Paramount and Skydance are negotiating with the team who created "The Last Samurai," specifically Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, to pen the screenplay for the film. Zwick is also being asked to direct the sequel.
According to Deadline, "Jack Reacher" grossed approximately $218.3 million worldwide and earned roughly around $80 million in the United States alone. The first installment was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie and it was also confirmed that he will no longer return to the upcoming reboot. "Jack Reacher" was also written by Richard Wenk, A.V. Club noted.
At present, there are reports that Cruise will most likely return to reprise his role in the spinoff. In "Jack Reacher," Cruise played the title role of a man who traveled to Virginia to meet a military officer named Susan. The two have been coordinating with each other and have also been communicating via phone, Cinema Blend reported.
However, what Jack thought would be a productive meet up resulted into a sea of ordeals - both personally and professionally - causing him to fight against the "bad guys." As of late, the official plot, synopsis and title of "Jack Reacher 2" has not yet been revealed.
"Jack Reacher" was based on the novel of Lee Child, entitled "Never Go Back" but it is still unclear which of Child's novels will the new installment be based from. According to some publications, the inclusion of Zwick and Herskovitz could make or break the franchise because they may find it difficult to live up to Wenk and McQuarrie's styles, but they could also add a witty and romantic flavor to the story.
There is still no word yet as to when "Jack Reacher 2" will start filming.
