'House of Cards: Season 4' could be released in the fall of 2016 - just in time for the U.S. Presidential race. But, major spoilers have been revealed as early as now.
At the end of season 3, Claire Underwood has left her ambitious politico husband. An unfortunate divorce will soon take place in the upcoming season. Talk has it that after the divorce, Claire would decide to run for the presidency against Frank.
"A lot of the strength of the show is based on the strength of that marriage. But as soon as we began to explore that, we realized there was no turning back," Beau Willimon told The Hollywood Reporter. Production for the show will be started in the summer this year, and is expected to be done before the year ends.
Frank Underwood was trying to win the Democratic nomination when the breakup happened. On the bright side, Doug has returned to his side. Nevertheless, the big question still remains - can Frank function without Claire? The fact that Claire knows most of her husband's secret means she might become his most powerful enemy in the upcoming season.
On the other hand, journalist Janine Skorsky is also coming back in season 4. Constance Zimmer, the actress who played the role, confirmed that she'd be returning at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. However, the purpose of her return is sealed pretty tightly under wraps.
Showrunner Beau Willimon explained that season 4 wouldn't be just about what the producers and writers want. He confirmed that they also listen to the fans' responses. But one thing's for sure, it will merge both the political and emotional struggles of the upcoming election and the power couple's separation.
As expected, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright will be back to reprise their roles as Frank and Claire Underwood, along with several cast members who appeared in the first 2 seasons of 'House of Cards'.
