Tiger Airways to Join Indian Airline Race

By

Tiger Airways, the low cost Singapore based air carrier is exploring possibilities to tie up with an India based airline to offer intra-city air travel in India. According to Tiger Airways Singapore Commercial Director Kaneswaran Avili, "Currently, we are studying about having an inter-airline agreement or a strategic partnership with (an) Indian airline."

The company has been flying Indian skies since 2007 and has been offering flights between Singapore and India. The majority shareholder of Tiger Airways is Singapore Airlines. Avili added that the flights by Tiger Airways in its routes have increased to eleven times a week.

The current flights service passengers between Singapore to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Truchirapalli and Truvananthapuram. The plan is to introduce new flights between Singapore and Kolkata and Singapore-Coimbature-Singapore route by 2015.

Another possible revenue stream is cargo operations in India, as the occupancy rate per flight is nearly 80%. Thus another part of the agreement would be to find a partner to help in cargo operations in India.
