Director and producer Cameron Crowe is badly criticized by Hawaiian natives for making the movie "Aloha". He is called culturally insensitive and is accused of giving "disrespectful misappropriation" to the Hawaiian term.
Cameron Crowe's Aloha Movie is a love story of an Air Force pilot Allison Ng (Emma Stone) and defense contractor Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper). Though the film is a romantic comedy, it wasn't spared from bad criticism. The title of the movie got the writer, producer and director Cameron Crowe into trouble with the Hawaiian natives and the Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA). The issues revolve on the rudely ill use of the term "Aloha", slighting Hawaiian culture, and "whitewashing" Hawaii. Walter Ritte, a native Hawaiian activist, openly said that by the title of the film alone, the movie creator along with his creative team would bastardize their sacred word and eventually would make a handsome money out of it. Speaking of profit, it seems that this is the implied "deeper" issue of those people who are against of the title of the movie.
Though there are quite several individuals and entity who are expressing their anger and or sentiments against Cameron Crowe's Aloha Movie, Sony Pictures has sent their representative in defense of Crowe. The Company's spokesperson said that some people are just "quick to judge" without watching the movie yet or even reading the script. In fact, it was stated in the released statement of Sony that said movie respectfully showcases "the spirit and culture of the Hawaiian people."
Instead of commenting on the critiques in the social media, Director Crowe posted a featurette of "Aloha" that Sony Pictures hails as "The spirit of Hawaii". This is a good move of not retaliating the Hawaiian natives. It simply shows that Crowe means no disrespect of the sacred word and the culture of the Hawaiian people in general. As disclosed by Sony Pictures, Crowe spent a great deal of researching about the people, its indigenous culture and location prior to filming. Crowe was known to be inactive for four years, and Cameron Crowe's Aloha Movie is supposed to be his comeback project in Hollywood.
Lastly, Aloha also stars Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, Bill Murray, Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin. Cameron Crowe's Aloha Movie is set to be released tomorrow in theaters, and as of press time, there's no advisory of any last minute changes concerning title and rescheduling of its showing.
